Speaking from experience, without question you would gain at least one
benefit going solid state and that's the huge savings in the power bill.
That SS TX will literally pay for itself in power savings (as well as
reduced costs in tube replacements).
As for the processing (setting aside the stereo question for a moment) if
your current processor is old and/or not able to "fill the envelope" very
well a new processor set up correctly can deliver some improved coverage.
As they say though YRMV. Keep in mind the "thicker" the modulation envelope
the better the coverage if all other aspects of the TX plant and antenna
system are in good order.
I installed a new processor at the last AM I worked and when I set up the
new processor I then realized how bad the previous processor really was.
Once I had a properly processed signal with a fuller denser modulation
envelope I also saw how much better our coverage was with the new processor.
I can't speak about stereo performance on AM as I never had the chance to
deal with that. But any stereo exciter investment is going to be rendered
moot when all stations have to go full tie IBOC.
