I have 2 silence sensors...
NEIGHBORS!
I have 2 friends in town who tune into the station several times a
day and if they hear silence, either a dead carrier or nor carrier..
they call to make sure I'm OK and nothing is seriously wrong.
I've had them both call up at least once when the station went dead
air after automation f&$%#d up while p[laying a song, didn't move
onto the next one.. and just sat there "fat, dumb and happy" with
nothing on air. My firend Clyde(a 60 year old retired electrical
engineer and ham operator) called up one day and said, "Paul, I dun
reckon you got dead air...".....I didn't even know it! If for some
reason I don't sign on for the day (Technical mishap, equipment
failure, etc) by 10am, they usually call me as well too.
Not the best method, but it usually works pretty well! lol

Good grief! It's not all that hard or expensive to hook a silence
sensor to the dial-out remote control! So, maybe nobody cares?
(I have noticed that some local TV stations may be off the air for a
day or two. I guess that since 95% or more of TV viewing is via
cable, they don't care about those of us who still use
over-the-air. But that doesn't apply to radio.)
