As Robert alludes, the real culprit is the Ibiquity / NRSC-5
hybrid system which places digital transmission immediately
beyond the central analog sidebands.
It might have been interesting to see field trials of the
system Lucent developed which put digital information
UNDER the analog adjacent to carrier. However, when USADR
bought the Lucent DR operation and renamed itself Ibiquity,
further work on that system stopped.
One might say that Ibiquity earned their present market
position the old fashioned way. They bought the
competition.
Fortunately, DRM remains as an independent effort that may
gain traction in other venues. At some point, that could
force some interesting contests, but only time will tell.
