Back in 1964, the station was manned 24/7, or at least at night, during
directional operations.
Then, the RCA BTA-10 was to the left of the phasor, where the Nautels
appear to be now.
The lettering on the building's exterior "50000 Watt Station" was
significant, as L.A. ... now this Nation's second largest city, and this
Nation's #1 market ... had but two 50 kW stations before 1947's
installation of KMPC ... these two being KFI and KNX ... and it wouldn't
get its fourth 50 kW-er until KPOL went on-air in 1955.
I'm talking full-time here, as KGBS was a limited timer (L-KDKA), and the
area's other 50 kW-ers were either also daytimers, as were KPOL and KDAY
originally, or were licensed to suburban cities (Pasadena, for example).
