It is with regret that I forward the following to the list. The article
doesn't note it, but he was 81 at the time of his passing. Paul Rhoades
was the second of only three news directors we've had in 52 years. That
statistic never fails to amaze me...

One of the historic figures of Iowa broadcast news, Paul Rhoades, died
Sunday at a Des Moines nursing home.

Rhoades began work at KRNT Radio in June of 1949 and moved to television
when KRNT-TV signed on the air in 1955. He anchored the 6 o'clock news
from the very first day straight through until his retirement in 1993.

Rhoades made up half of the newscasting duo that dominated central Iowa
television for a generation. With Rhoades at 6 o'clock and Russ Van Dyke
at 10 o'clock, KRNT-TV (now KCCI-TV) dominated the television ratings
for decades.

With Van Dyke serving as news director until his retirement, Rhoades was
managing editor. He took over as news director in 1983 until he stepped
down from the management position in 1990. He continued on the anchor
desk until 1993. (more <http://www.kcci.com/news/11287830/detail.html>)
