[BC] The END of Internet Radio?

Interesting article. My guess is that as usual the truth will lie
somewhere in the middle. Not wanting to sound like a stuck record, but
things tend to morph into what ultimately works for the majority in the
marketplace. If Internet radio is really viable on an ongoing basis, it
will adjust accordingly. Otherwise Internet radio may well disappear.
That would not really be because of these fees it would be because the
business model was shaky to begin with. The same is true with satellite
radio and over the air radio. If the operation is sound and what the
public wants and uses it will last indefinitely. If there is a
fundamental flaw in the foundation, it will die due to a number
different unforeseen reasons. You can't really 'save' any of the above
media. Those who tend to try to force an outcome usually do so with way
inside the box thinking and will therefore fail. It is always those who
are thinking outside the box who come up with the next great thing or
rescue an existing means of distribution.
It is interesting to note that some of the great new things we hear
about may not be as great and as new as we think. Take as an example
direct broadcast of audio and video to cell phones. If you look at some
of the FCC actions you will see the source of the broadcasts are from
separate high power UHF transmitters on their own frequencies and not a
part of the basic cell network. Thats is not too different than
satellite radio depending on a large number of terrestrial repeaters.
It would appear that the one to many model of old fashioned radio still
has legs.
