I agree with Burt's comment.   I built a 50Kw 4-Tower array about 
3 miles from my house a few years ago...The lines were - 2-1-5/8 - 
one 7/8 and one 1/2 inch.   All were installed inside conduit.
Don't forget the pull rope.   Nice thing is that the pressure inside 
the transmitter building was conducted via the conduits to all the 
tuning houses keeping them under positive pressure at the same time.

With that being said, I am sure that there are areas where direct 
burial of lines is perfectly OK...In my case the number of 'mounds'
in the field told me that there was a great deal of underground 
activity.

One experience of having to replace the lines would make a 
very convincing argument.
