I found the following PDF interesting reading. It claims that 
Symantec/Norton is considerably better than McAfee. Avast and AVG aren't 
much poorer than Norton. Microsoft's OneCare performed so poorly that it 
didn't get "certification". It was the only non-certified program among 
the 15 tested.

Norton performed much better that AVAST & AVG in detecting polymorphic 
viruses.  The test required identifying which of 12 families of W32.
