But the point is, then it only has to be done once. In my many years of
being concerned about utility power, I've only had two or three 
underground feeds go bad. One due to lightning, one due to a fence
company, and the other to "old line" according to the power company.

However, I've had MANY power outages on sites that are fed overland.

This is the puzzling part to me, why not "do it right" the first time, then
spend the resources and energy into other endeavors from then on?
