I used to use a .22 to take care of noisy insulators after giving the power
company notice to fix them when I lived in rural Michigan.

I could go down the hall and ask the transmission line guy... but it's
my understanding that it is a cost issue.
I think all of the residential service in this town (Fort Collins, CO)
are now buried lines. But the transmission lines are still mostly
on poles.
With the new emphasis on security and environmental impact it wouldn't
surprise me if more transmission line goes underground. It would
definitely cut down on the guys who take pot-shots at insulators with
their 30-06.
As for wind, one of the big issues of turning Wyoming into a wind farm
is transmission. With a distributed wind farm you need to have the
infrastructure to get the power out of production and shipped to the
consumer. Putting up the pinwheels is just the start.
With that, I'm going back to lurking. I'm way off topic and
appreciate your indulgence.
Chris
