Great pics of the Foote Creek wind project at Arlington. Gotta love
GoogleMaps. Original project was rated to produce 85 megawatts of power,
enough for about 27 thousand homes. They make power with winds from 8-65
mph... then shut down when winds gust higher... measured to 125 mph up on
this high mountain ridge. $62 million to build the first phase, with 69
turbines, in 1999. Now 133 turbines online. Google "wyoming wind farm" for
more info. You didn't think I actually knew all of that off the top of my
pointy head, did you?
Couldn't find it on GoogleMaps, but there's another big wind farm south of
Cheyenne, just over the Colorado line. It's not as big as the one at
Arlington, but you can see it from I-25 southbound as you drive through
Cheyenne. Really pretty when the afternoon sun's shining in from the west,
with dark thunderclouds in the east. White windmills, dark sky... cool
stuff.
It's not unusual for the winds to blow over semis on the interstate in SE
Wyo... 70 mph+ out of a good storm. Mostly south of here (thank goodness),
so my antennas & dishes don't go flippy-floppy. There, now were back to
talkin'bout radio. ;-)
