Mr. Bailey claims
=======================
" Back in the day Gary speaks of, you had 200 engineers and 10 lawyers
at the FCC. Today, it's the reverse, 200 lawyers and 7 engineers. It's
all about politics, and young people fighting over positions and out for
themselves. They are more concerned about making more money to pay for
that new home, swimming pool, college education for their kids, new car,
etc. Money in politics over rides the rules, PERIOD."
=======================
As one who was around Way Back When, politics affected the FCC
differently then. The emphasis was technical. People largely played by
the rules. Money was still a major goal. Every politician had a friend
who wanted a radio station. Only AM was of interest. The result was a
continual change in the rules so that more and more "friends" could get
their station. One of the results has been the large number of
daytimers and marginal others barely making ends meet and and some skate
around the rules in the process. There are thousands of examples.
More recently 80-90, LPFM and the translator explosion on FM are
examples of changing the rules so that the politicians' friends could
get a station.
Cynical, but in a different way. Perhaps an effete version of the law of
the jungle advocated by a number of this list.
