The manual for my BE FX-50 references an add-on module that can be used to sync two of these exciters.  As I remember, you would send a tone from the module to lock the two AFC circuits together. 

Having had a booster for many years, the downside of many of these schemes is the variable nature of FM propagation.

Boosters work best in areas isolated by terrain, where you can throw the interference zones into unpopulated areas.  Without terrain isolation, no matter what scheme you use, these interference zones will walk in and out of areas you don't want them in.
