That's where the vpn comes in to play, particularly since the free linux
version of RealVNC isn't secure - I can use any available aspect of the
network since I become a member of it (the vnc is only for individual
machine control) and do it as securely as I build the vpn to be.
I recently installed the Windows Mobile (until I hack the phone over to
Gentoo) port of OpenVPN's GUI and I can run about 60% of my usual remote
computing functionality on my phone.
