There is no economy in using old transmitters other than false economy.
I have seen the smallest and poorest stations save in many ways by
replacing the antique TX with some thing more efficienct and reliable.
This is especially true if they have no full time technician. That is
those who have business sense.
I mentioned in another post that I would use an older solid state AM TX
if I absolutely had to. They are technologically close to what is out
there now if you discard IBOC operation. I also rebuilt and updated a
Collins 831 to 816R level (20 years old at the time) because the
technology had not (and still has not) changed for that type TX.
Now, please give me a logical reason to keep a 50 year old TX on air.
Please base this on what a person who is in broadcasting as a business
not as a hobby would do. Also, please explain how you will continue to
keep the rig tubed and how it will meet emission specs as they are
tightened.
