One thing we can be sure of in the short term is that there won't be any 
bandwidth freed.  No receiver on the market receives both systems so the 
duplication of content _HAS_ to continue.

I'd imagine that XM's in house chip design group has been working on a 
both-systems chip as a low-priority project for a long time.

But it's a little like HD radio. It will take many years before there 
are enough dual-system sat receivers to allow shutting down duplication.

Higher subscription fees are a more immediate likelihood.
