I think what Glen means (forgive me Glen if I'm off base), but I think what he
means is that they are inexpensive (comparatively) but also limited. However
there are applications where they perform very, very well.

You cannot do a lot in terms of tailoring the sound, but they provide for some
nice peak limiting and AGC.

Inovonics makes some processors that work pretty well.  Maybe they're not as
good as an Optimod (R) but they don't cost as much, either.
