Many of you have seen the "Glass Enclosed Command Center" at XM or
possibly a Sirius equivalent. XM's hundred-plus audio channels go
through there and they have bar-type audio meters for each channel
placed high on the wall.
There are only a couple of people in the room. They couldn't possibly
be listening to all those channels or even keeping close watch on the
VU-meter equivalents.
When was the last time you heard extended dead air on XM or Sirius?
Do they have silence sensors that require manual intervention or
does an alternate source take over automatically?
The bottom line being that they manage to avoid dead air with over ten
times as many audio streams as a station cluster with HD2, internet, etc.
The sat-casters don't even have commercials to make-good on most channels.
"Real Radio" people need to emulate them.
