Isn't this the basic issue for all of these silly HD arguments? Even
IF the receivers worked better than (or even as well as) advertised,
even IF the transmission systems didn't muck up the rest of the band
(oh, and weren't we trying to fix that with expansion of the AM band
once?) and even if the radio functions were standard on every radio in
production, no one cares if the content sucks.
I don't care to see American Idol in HD any more than I care to hear
Jack FM in faux-HD. People are paying for satellite radio because it
does what commercial radio won't. It plays deep, interesting, niche
formats.
Until commercial radio gets more interesting, it won't matter if it's
3kHz wide analog AM, or uber-stupendo-digital FM.
