I remember in Tacoma (Wa) KTNT was the only FM in town. Transmitter was a
GE antenna was a Sill-Ray (sp?). Main uses -
Main Channel ran music and spots. On the other end were custom made radios
for the city busses. The station would broadcast a tone just prior to a
spot which would increase the volume in the busses for the spots. In those
days the only listeners were in those buses. They did do a subcarrier with
I believe Muzak which started in Seattle. The FM went on the air in 1948,
the AM in 52 and the TV in about 54. It's all been split up now. The AM
is gone, the TV is now KSTW owned by Viacom/CBS and the FM (now KBSG) is
about to belong to Bonneville, thus ending my 25 year association with the
frequency. On yes, in my 1963 VW, I had an FM tuner in the jockey-box.
Actually mobile FM in those days was pretty good (before stereo)
