But, in many cases, it turned out to be short for Fortune Maker (for
owners who got in -- and out -- at the right time)
Today, it seems strange that major market FM licenses were once
considered worthless, but there are many amazing stories of stations
that were literally given away. For example, Pat Robertson received a
"tax deductible" donation of five commercial FM licenses (including
equipment and real estate) near large upstate New York markets in
1968. About 12 years later, he sold them for pretty good sums of
money. Somehow, that doesn't seem quite legal, but you have to
remember who was playing the game.
For many early FM believers, there were some lean times, but if they
were able to hang in long enough, they reaped a nice reward. People
like Woody Sudbrink, Jim Gabbert, and the late Dave Kurtz (a member of
our Philadelphia SBE chapter) come to mind.
