This think of putting a Valcom on a ship has been done before and the
results were not good.

I presume you are referring to KKOL in Seattle. In all fairness KKOL was
a little less than an optimum situation. The ship was anchored at the
west side of Elliott Bay with rising terrain immediately to the west of
it. The only real saltwater path was to the east directly into downtown
Seattle. It might have performed better if it were anchored in the bay
and truly surrounded by water. But its dependance on shore power
appraently prevented that. There photos of the KKOL shipboard
installation on my web site at http://community.webtv.net/am-dxer/ that
clearly show the high terrain immediately to the west of the ship and
the saltwater path into downtown Seattle to the east.

On the same web site you will also find a link to my tour of the CKWX
studios in Vancouver BC which sport a 75-foot Valcom and a 400 watt
Nautel transmitter on the roof as a backup system. Also, CKNW in
Vancouver has two 75-foot Valcom backup antennas - one atop the building
housing the studios and another at the main transmitter site.
