Whatever you do, ifyou replace the IPA sockets DO NOT use the original style caps!! Use some
Silver Mica ones instead and solder them to the sockets. You can get a kit of them from Harris.
You can remove the sockets without disassembling the from then on, not to mention they last longer.
BTW: Get a short stool that will allow you to lie on your back on a pillow placed on top of the
blower box. Much easier on the old frame (yours). Sit on the stool or a box and lean back into
the transmitter (cover your face and eyes to protect you from the solder drips (A towel over your
face and safety glasses on the eyes). A good light is indispensable.

However, I remember having to replace several 4CX250B IPA sockets, in an
FM-20H3, due to shorted, integral screen bypass capacitors. After the
replacing the first one, the fact that I had to do it again always made me
want to cry. Can you spell all-nighter with sore back for a week and solder

After replacing theFM20H3 IPA tube sockets, I stated I would never
do that again. Then a friend wanted me to help him with an old
Collins 831-G transmitter and I grunted agreement. We just removed
the driver box screws and took the entire box to the well lighted
work bench to replace the socket. He had done this before. I still
don't want to replace them on a FM20-H3.
