I can relate to that.  I called for with a question about an old rig I have
(BC-1F).  The guy at the factory was clueless.

One of the first times that I got an intimation that Gates may not have been
the best thing going was a quip by Barnett F. Goldberg, P.E.[RIP], at a 1968
SCBA seminar:" When all else fails, look in the instruction manual and there
you'll find the guarantee from Gates."
A couple of decades later, I think it was Rick Stevens [RIP] that said that
the standard thing was for someone to call the factory about a problem only
to be told that they had never heard of it; then, a couple of hours later,
the area salesman would call saying that there was a kit available from
stock to fix it.    lol
Now, let's hear your stories, if they're fit to be told.....
