Many recordings are done in multiple locations or at different times.
At TM we'd record percussion one day, strings the next, then added
the singers. A click track standardizes everything. A 24 track master
was often sent to several cities. At the time Los Angeles was known
for rhythm sections. London was known for strings. Others were known
for rhythm tracks. Others for singers. In our case, the master was
returned for a final mixdown.

The click track appears in performers headsets. A metronome would be
audible in the recording.
