It's when the carrier and sideband or sidebands are in quadrature phase that
selective fading causes distortion. I don't know why there would be any
difference in the condition if one sideband is removed. With envelope
detection you get distortion, with synchronous detection the demodulated
output is a function of phase. When the carrier and sidebands are at 90
degrees relative to one another you get no output.

Maybe I'm not quite awake yet this morning, but I fail to understand this.
Selective fading happens when there is an incoherent phase relationship
between the two sidebands.  When one sideband is removed, this ought not to
happen.  N'est-ce pas?
