You may be thinking of the  Kahn   (Wrath of)   CSSB  Compatable  SSB  system 
for AM broadcasting.
 
Tested at several stations including KDKA.   See the Green NAB  handbook,  A. 
Prose Walker,Editor.
 
This was the basis of the Kahn AM Stereo System.
