>>People like Josh Wilkey and my friend Scott Bailey should be
considered heros in our eyes..
It's not that they are heroes, it's just that they are doing what all of
radio USED to do. It's called public service and it's what sets radio
head and shoulders above television, print and satellite. There is no
immediacy like radio. When I was in TV, for us to break into
programming, we'd need a camera operator, director, audio engineer,
Chyron and tape operator. For radio to break into programming, all they
need to do is open the mic. A classic example of radio's decline is
WHAS in Louisville. Up until about a year ago, they had 5 minutes of
local news at the top of the hour delivered by someone sitting in the
WHAS studio. Now, they have a one minute Fox break, followed by a two
minute commercial break, followed by a stupid, inane time announcement
(IT'S 2 OH 3!) after that maybe one minute of local news. Closing out
the top of the hour is another two minute break, mostly PSA and station
promos. And let's not forget the IBOC hash that is there all day. Our
local NPR station does better than that. At least they have an honest
to goodness newsroom!
Small broadcasters are still carrying the torch for radio. I find it
very sad that people in larger markets will never know and see the full
potential that radio used to be. Scott, Josh and several of my smaller
clients are what radio is all about.
