It's whatever the manufacturer specifies.  I generally follow the 36" 
recommendation.  8"...WOW...

5" or 6" is plenty big as long as you use a wide sweep elbow...say a 
48" or larger and not put too much tension on the line as it's 
pulled.  8" is not that easy to find and is VERY costly.  So I would 
tent to stay away from anything bigger than 6".
