Scott:

My gut instinct would be to go with either a BE or Armstrong kilowatt AM transmitter.

Our former AM uses a BE, and i talk with their chief from time to time. The problem with the BE is that it uses a transformer-less power supply. Hence the power supply has no isolation from any spikes coming down the power line during storms (or having a hv distribution line short over into the 11 kv. feeder, which has much the same effect as lightning on the poor transmitter).

So you really need surge protection for those times when Mother Nature and her husband Thor have a knock-down dragout upstairs & start smashing the china. I would be inclined to install a 1:1 transformer on the incoming AC.

I haven't had much exposure to the Armstrong AM transmitter, but I have an Armstrong FM exciter. Their service seems to be good, and the company has a good reputation. The price point also is pretty good.
