 Those of us with a telegraph background know about an operator's "sign."

 With exception of checks, and certain demands by some lawyers, it's
 about always accepted as valid as any full signature.

 Mine also appears as a vanity logo on some of my checks, so also serves
 as a way to verify the actual signature.
 Close enough for handwriting verification, yet different enough that if it
 appears in the signature, confirms a forgery.
