Does anybody know how the metamorphosis from the RIAA curve to the
RIAA hijack actually occurred?
Many broadcast "old-timers" remember when the RIAA was a standards
organization. They codified recording
standards and defined what "gold" or "platinum" sales represented.
Author's licenses were handled by
ASCAP, SESAC, and BMI, etc. That way, a radio station or other
"outlet" could purchase a yearly license,
based upon coverage area. Authors, composers, and musicians somehow
got paid without any interference
from RIAA. It would be interesting to find out the truth behind
RIAA's new presence in previously uncharted
territory. My bet is it's all about graft and corruption.
