Given a finite marketing budget, we want to build our Internet
processing and network business by exposing our product line and
services to streaming and netcasting customers who are not already
familiar with our company and who never be caught dead in the
"dinosaur hall" (AKA the Radio hall :-). That being said, we may
possibly have some presence in the Radio hall as well, but the
details are being worked out at the last minute.
We calculate that the cost for talking to a single customer at NAB is
in the order of $100 when we take a big booth in the Radio hall. This
is got to be the lousiest "cost per thousand" deal in broadcast
equipment marketing, and is the main reason why we are more tightly
focused this year on building new business and extending our brand.
Indeed, I think that many vendors could make a serious argument for
not exhibiting at the show at all and instead putting one's marketing
budget into other media. The Internet has changed everything, except,
it seems, for trade shows. Then again, look what happened to Comdex.
