Thanks Bill, sounds like your right on the mark.   I put a VOM on the leads
and it came back up, just enough bumping around to  make it work for now.
I'll get a new meter.

your welcome, i've repaired many meters in the past. simpson, triplett and  a 
bunch of others. yea those meter swings can be real tricky.
