[BC] STL question

Yes. What a challenge! The control room was completely encased in copper
mesh. The frame for the control room door had copper nailed to the frame so
when it closed all that mesh in the door was grounded. We were surrounded by
RF. There were 4 other stations including KDFC. KKHI-FM, KEAR-FM, KMPX-FM
and KABL-FM. We used old florescent tubes and strapped them to one of the
tower's guy wires that went over the road. Great lighting for driving at
night. It was pitch black up there. On a clear night the view of San
Francisco was spectacular as you were looking from the West of the Golden
Gate. When the fog came in going up and down Wolfback Ridge road was NOT
fun. You could easily drive off the edge.
That place was something else. I was there twice. First in 1966 when I was
still going to SF State. I did 6 to mid. I came back as P.D. in 1980. We
beat KKHI for the first time. Ed broke out the Champaign. If you knew Ed, he
would find any excuse for a party. :)
Quick story. I did a program on Sunday evenings called "Direct-to-Disk". All
the recordings were classical recordings mastered in that manner. Telarc was
a big label in the direct-to-disc arena. Well, guess what finally arrives!
You got it. The 1812 Overture with real cannons. I put the Orban in bypass
mode and rode the pots as if my life depended on it. If I hadn't, that
transmitter would have taken flight when the cannons hit. It sounded great.
Talk about your dynamics.
Fun times.
