Yes, noise reduction makes a major improvement.  I liked the "Dolby S"
units that were once manufactured by Radio Systems for use with their
cart machines.  Many of you may recall these boxes, they had the
trademark "RS-squared".  Dolby S is the cut-down "consumer" version of
SR, but really outperforms Dolby B and C.

I made a little modification to our Marti transmitter: by flipping a
switch, the internal compressor would be bypassed and the line input
level fixed at +4 dBm, but the peak clipper would remain in line.  I
used a Symetrix 528 ahead of the Dolby S unit and set its output so
the modulation stayed just below clipping threshold.   With this
system, we made some 30 mile shots that sounded just as good as 1 mile
shots.  Analog Bliss!
