Mikes' answer is right on. I've done just that. A
pair of 111C's for 1.5 miles of wire. Run DC
voltage between center tap and bround at the
receiving end and a meter at the send end. The DC
helps with the noise and the meter just shows the
circuit is not broken. Doesn't take much current.
Sprint bought North Supply (Telco Equipment
supplier). They might have the transfromers, but
they used to have a minimum order size of like
$50 or $100! They also had the Teloc type
equailizers, passive. Of course it's pretty easy
to build your own....
