Verizon's offering is actually more expensive then you quote.  It's $59/mth if you want to sign a 2 year deal with them and have a 'qualifying' (read sufficiently expensive) voice plan with them.  Otherwise their EVDO "Mobile Broadband" service is $79/mth.

A used laptop can be had for under 200 bucks. Sprint EVDO is 49 bucks a month.
So is Verizon's wireless Internet offering.
All I can say is that if things are that bad there......
