What amazes me is remotes that are using Comrex and Tielines POTS units with good quality connections and the marvels of digital transmission the audio sounds terrible. I helped a friend check out one of these systems and we found that "Digital Overload" was most of the problem. His Remote techie and station Groupie were not wantching any levels they just set up the remote, which also sounded distorted over the local PA system. Basically, overload the audio at the first microphone pre-amp with levels too high, means that the audio quality cannot get any better on down the transmission path.

When I worked for CCR Williston, the play by play guy interview someone at
the came. It was a tournament of some sort being held far from the
station........ Well, he recorded the interview on a casette deck that had
either a really crappy hand held mic or a built in condenser mic and then
fed that down the (cell) phone line..
It was SO bad i could understand a single word of the interview. I vowed,
personally (and quietly) to myself that I'd never allow that on the station
if i was board opping.
