To swing this topic back towards Broadcast-related... :)
The only problem we ever had with AOL was when we installed their version 6.0
software. It ended up trashing the "gateway" (not a brand name) computer that
we use to access our systems via PCAnywhere. (It is the machine that the
router uses "port forwarding" to give us access to PCA.) During a Christmas par
ty
that particular year, our MA station (that was near the facility we were
using) had a glitch that caused two program sources to air simultaneously. When
their CE logged in, he was unable to access anything! Helplessly, we had to
accept the fact that two programs were going to be on the air for the rest of t
hat
1/2 hour, as it would take nearly that much time for him to drive to the
station.
When he got back there later that day, he found that the culprit was AOL 6.0!
That evening, when I got home, I logged into our system and sure enough... it
too was DOA! I could not access any of the other machines! When I got to work
the following day, I couldn't even access the system directly from the
keyboard of that particular machine!
A quick phone call to my colleague in MA confirmed the solution: uninstall
AOL 6.0! That instantly (and permanently) cured that problem! As a result, I
have made it a firm policy that we will *never* use any version of AOL beyond
5.0. Another reason is their insistance at building a VPN between your machine
and theirs. IMHO, I do *not* want their system having that direct, unhindered
"pipeline" into my machines, thank you! Evey version of AOL software since 5.0
does this. Also, 5.0 ignores HTML in e-mail, so it is impossible for scripts,
trojans, etc, to ever penetrate the system. (They also have very effective
server-based filtering.)
