You may be too young to recall the golden years when clear channel
(non-capitalized but sometimes under-capitalized) stations really had no
other U.S. station on the frequency.  Thus,  WOAI could be heard over most
of the country at night; it was possible to hear WBZ Boston 1030 in
California, WCBS New York 880 (by nulling CMAB Havana), and WABC 770
over/under 3LO Melbourne.  Then came the bright idea to put one other
station on the "clears,"  e.g. KBOI Boise on 670 along with WMAQ Chicago,
KDWN Las Vegas 720 co-existing with WGN, KRVN Lexington, NE on 880, KTWO
Casper on with WBZ.  This eventually led to the chaos we see today on the
former clears.
