Yes, they can make a major improvement in reliability. About fifteen
years ago, I was fortunate to find a local "hamfest vendor" closing
out his inventory of Robinson Nugent machined-pin sockets for about 20
cents on the dollar, so I bought a bunch for future projects -- and to
replace the stock microprocessor sockets in some ITC 99B cart machines
that were acting flaky. Along with soldering the 7805 regulators in
place, this fixed the problem; we kept those machines (purchased in
1982) running reliably in the air studio until automation was
installed in 2003.
On the subject of cheap-IC-socket-induced-remote-control-failures, who
else remembers those "Brand T" remote controls that were popular
around 25 years ago? I forget which brand of tin-plated sockets they
used, but those were horrible.
