I only heard "ten bells" from the AP one time, in July 1981. It
really caught me ear as I was walking down the hall past the room the
teletype was in. My first thoughts were that it was either really
important, or a malfunction that needed attention.
It was when a walkway in a hotel in Kansas City collapsed, killing
114 people in the process. Ten bells was entirely appropriate, and I
never heard the signal any other time than that once.
