I was kid when I first listened. Before manmade noise and lousy
receivers were invented I could receive WOR almost like a local in
Western, MA. Actually, all the New York 50Kw signals were very
listenable. I could also receive the FMs with a roof antenna at about
130 air miles. I listened on a cheap, ugly green, AM-only radio
instead of the stereo because I was supposed to be sound asleep for
school. In those days even cheap and ugly was very sensitive. Good
quality audio. I think it was an Admiral.

I could receive stations as far away as WOAI, San Antonio. I wasn't
DX'ing. I was listening for pleasure.

I spent many very sleepy days after listening to Shep and Barry
Farber. Barry took me to lunch one day - still a fabulous storyteller
and a true Southern gentleman. That was one table that didn't turn
fast. I'm still amazed that many of the great personalities I grew up
listening to ended up working for me years later. True professional
gifts that last.
