[BC] tube sound (tube transmitters)

Don't think that didn't cross my mind back then, but I was so frustrated
with tube type gear, at the time, I was ready to see the Collins go.
That was 1997, getting close to 10 years ago.

What you should have done was rewire the Collins box with neon bulbs
behind
the tubes to make it look like the tubes were lit and have the various
meters show that they were working and the pilot lites working and
disable
the rest of it. That way you could have had your cake and eat it too.
Visitors would have enjoyed the looks of old tx, while the real signal
was
eminating from the equipment rack.

Mark,
Seems like I only got 6 to 7 months out of the 4-400's I used with the
Collins 20V-3. I had to rotate the tubes every 4 months for the thing to
sound loud enough to compete with a 5 KW neighbor that was using a
Harris MW-5. I also changed out the 807 in the driver section as well,
when I changed out the 4-400's. The Collins "DID NOT" have the audio
quality that my Harris or Armstrong has! I did good just to get 120%
positive modulation out of the Collins, and that's with a new set of
tubes.
