I know that my girl, who is an HR Generalist, makes sure that EVERYONE who
applies for a position with their company gets a letter thanking them for
taking the time to apply, even if they are not in the running for the
position.

I assume a posting for broadcast engineer garner fewer applications. An
application in response to an SBE position posting, and mentioned as such,
should receive a polite reply at the very least. My original eMail on the
subject was that I have been surprised by the rudeness and offhand
character of the process.
