Ron,
Sadly, there are a few of them out there that create a fake surround
effect, just as you described. You should try a disc that has the discrete
mix. Most of them are produced that way. About 95% of my own collection
are discrete, with no tricks applied.
If you like Steely Dan, or Donald Fagan, try those discs. Here's a god
