The least you should get is a letter of intent spelling out the job
responsibilities, salary, bonuses, percentage of gross revenue,
vacation time and anything else you might have been promised. Once
you've been hired and started, make sure that letter appears in your
personnel file and you have a copy of your own. A single piece of
paper has been worth many thousands for me when downsizing finally
hits. Depending on your salary level, vacation pay can carry you a
long way to the next job.
One company downsized me and tried to screw me out of 4 weeks
vacation pay. A short visit to Human Resources produced my letter.
The legal department declared it to be legal and I got my money. Of
course, I made it clear I could make a power increase on a newly
purchased station very difficult by visiting neighbors and suggesting
their kids would glow in the dark, costing them far more than what
they owed me.
Sometime you have to play dirty.
