You'd be surprised. There are many New Yorkers who find WFMU, 
formerly at Upsala College, worth receiving. If you want great free 
form radio that's the place to go. I was once a guest on their 
"Atrocious Music" show." WFUV at Fordham can teach free form folks a 
lesson, too. They're the folks who took Vin Scelsa's Idiot's Delight 
when it left WNEW-FM.

The college stations can take risks because there's no risk. New 
York's commercial stations have too much at stake to do much that's 
"thinking out of the box" unless their numbers are so bad there's no 
place to go but up. When it succeeds somewhere else it'll have a 
chance of making it to New York. It's like a Broadway show. They 
usually play other cities like Boston and New Haven before moving to New York.
