Unlike Phil Spector who promotes "Back To Mono", I love "good" Stereophonic
sound and have since it hit the market and was able to actually hear it in
1958. (I know there were Stereo recordings in earlier years but I'm using
that year as a reference point as I use "Rock Around The Clock" as the
"real" starting point for Rock 'n Roll in a mass sense) That being said.
If I remember correctly, when FM Stereo was being developed, the FCC was
ruled the Monophonic signal remain listenable and not compromised by the
stereo process. That was accomplished. However, with digital TV I will be
forced to trash all my sets (forget the year...2009 maybe?) and buy new
digital T.V.'s. First off, am I correct? If I'm wrong here I will stand
corrected when given the correct information. So, like the FM example above,
why wasn't it mandated analog T.V. signal be maintained with the same
integrity?
Background: I'm not a big T.V. viewer. When I do watch T.V. I usually watch
older movies (B&W, Film Noir etc.) that work well with the T.V. system we
have now. The 3:4 ratio is just fine for me.
Summary: I guess times have changed (don't know if for the better,
necessarily) and "new" things have become part of the disposable society in
which we live. Don't get me wrong,. I embrace digital technology but I don't
believe we should be throwing things away (or, as was said above "completely
supplant") because we can't make things live together in harmony.
Any comments?
